U.S. tax refund questions, answered

What the estimate can tell you—and what still belongs on the tax return.

Does gross income calculate my tax here?

No. Gross income is used only for the displayed effective-rate estimate. Enter total federal tax from a current return estimate for the refund calculation.

Do I include Social Security and Medicare withholding?

No. Form W-2 boxes 4 and 6 are payroll taxes and should not be added to federal income tax withheld. The relevant W-2 figure is generally box 2.

Does this include my state refund?

No. State and local income taxes have separate rules, forms, payments, and refunds. Run those through the appropriate state or local return process.

What counts as another tax payment?

Examples include quarterly estimated federal payments and a prior-year refund elected to be applied to the current year. Do not count a payment twice if tax software already includes it in withholding or credits.

Can the result predict when the IRS will issue a refund?

No. It estimates an amount only. Filing method, return completeness, identity checks, credit reviews, offsets, amended returns, and IRS processing all affect timing.

Why does tax software show a different amount?

The tax software is calculating liability and eligibility from the full return. A difference usually means an input here is incomplete, duplicated, or taken from a different stage of the return. Use the completed return’s result.

Does a balance due mean there will be a penalty?

Not necessarily. Penalties depend on timing, payment history, safe-harbor rules, and exceptions. This calculator does not test them.
